Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott

Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott has been in education for over 20 years, working toward creating more equitable and just educational system. Previously she did this as a school counselor, special education teacher, and providing community-based mental health counseling to youth and families. For the last decade she has served education as a Professor and School Counseling Coordinator at Old Dominion University in Virginia. Here she teaches the next generation of counselors and future professors- in ODU’s master’s, EdS and PhD programs.

She began her journey with MTSS as a school counselor- serving as her school’s first coach, overseeing the initial creation and implementation for several years. As a professor she translates these experiences to collaborating with schools, districts, and educational organizations around the country: giving keynotes, trainings, preconferences, coaching and consulting. Her work is grounded in the MTSS research she has conducted with colleagues. Mainly, she has published over 60 national journal articles and two books: A School Counselor's Guide to MTSS (2019; 2023) and Making MTSS Work (2020 and anticipated 2026 revision).

Dr. Goodman-Scott has also served as a school counseling scholar, leader, and advocate. She is a 2023 Fellow for the American Counseling Association (ACA) and a recipient of the 2020 ACA Research Award. Further, she was recently re-elected to a second term on the ACA governing board and also serves as a board member for ACA’s Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling (ACAC). She is on the editorial review board for multiple journals related to school counseling, including Associate Editor for ASCA’s Professional School Counseling journal. Through her 15+ years of involvement as a leader for the Virginia School Counselor Association, Dr. Goodman-Scott served as Chair of the VSCA Board (2019-2020) and is presently the co-chair of the Graduate Student and Research Committee. She recently spent many years co-coordinating a national network of school counseling faculty, was president of the national ACAC board (2020-2021), and represented Virginia at several White House School Counseling Convenings under First Lady Michelle Obama.

She lives in Virginia with her spouse and three spunky school-aged kids. On the weekends you can find her leading Girl Scouts, volunteering, chasing their puppy, or exploring new coffee shops. You can follow her on LinkedIn.
